  1. Before coming to Bloomington, I spent two years in Cedar Lake, in Lake County. It was absolutely one of the most violent places I’ve ever lived. I was a witness to a murder that the Cedar Lake police refused to investigate. There were six murders a year, in a town with 6,000 people. Percentage wise, that puts them ahead of Detroit, which was known as The Murder City. It puts them ahead of Northern Ireland during The Troubles. Every week the local paper also reported that someone was hopitalized when he was “shot accidentally, while cleaning his gun.” Domestic violence and rape weren’t reported because no one considered them crimes.
