Eric at Fanta points out that Penguin is offering some old great stuff in the Penguin Classics Deluxe Editions line with excellent covers by cartoonists of excellence that rivals the works themselves. Chis Ware / Voltaire. Frank Miller / Thomas Pynchon. Etc. What cool idea.
Note to self: stay out of bookstores for the next 18 months.
I bought The Sagas of the Icelanders for the cool cover. I was sure that I’d read it, because every time I pick it up I am seized with deep deep book lust and I find myself thinking, “Now this is a book that could really satisfy me.” The sagas themselves are pretty bleak. I haven’t gotten more than a hundred pages into the thing in the past year. I’ve bought a couple of others from this series. Every one of the Graham Greene selections is terrific, with or without a cool cover.
