Cringely sez the mini Mac is “all about the movies,” and he’s pretty persuasive. Speaking of movies, Bart, we saw Sideways this evening.
It was by no means a hard sell – I love wine, and have been raised to, and I have loved Paul Giamatti onscreen since seeing American Splendor at SIFF in, what, 2003? 2004?
As you intimated, Bart, it was great. We both loved it very much. Viv looks forward to identifying and trying the wines seen onscreen.
Speaking of trying the wines, on our way out of the theater, we were greeted by two women in green Sideways shirts (same shade as the promo literature) who handed us advertisements for some wine as seen in the film.
They were polite and not obnoxious, but it was actually kind of a pisser. I mean, it seemed to recontextualize the whole movie as an extended product placement.
I’ve tried to block the memory. Ah well. Glad y’all enjoyed it.
I dearly loved the movie too, though I was swooning for California when it was done. I suppose that’s the magic of film though – to be so completely transported somewhere that when you walk out to the gray skies and muddy sidewalks after the film it’s kind of a jolt. “Oy” you say, and think of red wine again. At least I did.
wow… this was, for my money, the most overated movie of the year. Part of the problem was perhaps the heightened expectations I had given its critical accolades. I found myself cringing at the self-absorbed, sterotypical wine-snob. I suppose one doesn’t have to like the characters to like a movie – but it helps. In the end, the two men provided ample amunition for any woman who would prefer to avoid our sex altogether.
