I’m nearing the end of my first readthrough of the Narnia books in about twenty years, and was considering the possibility of rereading one of Lewis’ adult-oriented books again for balance. The Screwtape Letters is now near the top of that list.
I’m sure the Chronicles of Narnia are cool books; but as a grade school/junior high-schooler, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe was the only one that really held my attention. Nowadays, two little details about that story kind of strike me funny: the fact that a kid could get THAT hooked on Turkish delight (sort of a rich person’s Aplets and Cotlets), implying that sweets make you evil; and the fact that the White Witch is equated with the Hebrew/Canaanite goddess/demoness Lilith, when she actually resembles the Nordic goddess Skadi (supposedly the source of the name Scandinavia, as well as the mythical inventor of skiing), in practically every detail…
